Shyamal Roy was born in Old Delhi in India and is a graduate of the Indian Institute of Technology, Kharagpur.

Shyamal studied photography under various masters in India, Europe, and the USA and attended the Nikon School of photography. His work has been exhibited in San Francisco, New York, and Paris. His photo book titled "Paris-Calcutta" won him the prestigious photojournalist of the year award from the Federation of Indians in America in 2000.

Shyamal Roy lives in the San Francisco bay area.
